Lett nok for 3D?
Jon
Hi Alf,
I have just purchased exactly the same model and a very similar engine (RCG 26cc from HC) and of course was anxious to find an online build thread . As this Phoenix Models Katana is sold in Europe, some Asian countries and Argentina, where I now live, it was hard to find information about it since it's basically a new product and not offered in the USA, where most reviews are generated.
I'm glad I found Modellflynytt and your very interesting, comprehensive and well documented build thread.
It's been a few days since you maiden her so I would like to ask how are you liking her flying characteristics. Light enough for 3D? Good at handling winds, easy to land?
PS, I will include my original English message because I'm using Google Translate and I am not sure if it would be understandable in Norwegian. I'm pretty sure you can speak English perfectly as do most Scandinavians.
Kind regards from Argentina
Jon
Hello, and welcome to Modellflynytt, nice to meet international rc pilots!
The model flies absolute great. The engine really surprised me. It was extremely easy to start. Only some few flips before it started on my first tank. I did 4 minutes groundrun before I did the maiden. I have never adjusted the needles.....
With the RCGF 26 you need a propsize of approx 17-18" inches and that makes the ground clearance a little low.
The takeoff and landings are easy and the model is stable. For normal aerobatic the model feels good, some small adjustments in knifeedge both sides. The model feels light and good, but the rudder deflections are really not very large and makes the model more of an traditional aerobatic machines than a 3D monster.
But of course you can 3D it, it hovers easily and you can see me doing some mild 3D stuff in the youtube video.
Hope also the video shows the characteristics’ of the model. The first part of the video shows the 4.th startup...
Unfortunately the weather is grey and dark, but hopefully will show a bit of the model any way.
Great luck and the google translation was pretty good!
Alf Takk for informasjonen,
Mitt oppsett:
RCG 26cc fra Hobbyking
Xoar 17x6 og / eller APC 17x6. Sannsynligvis 16x8 Xoar for Breakin.
Hitec 645 Servoer
DX7 RX
Great video.
Hilsen,
J.
Thanks Alf for the information,
In about a week, I will start the build.
My setup:
RCG 26cc from Hobbyking
Xoar 17x6 and/or APC 17x6. Probably Xoar 16x8 for break-in.
Hitec 645 Servos
DX7 rx
2 voltage regulators, one for rx (1800 2s lipo) and 1 for CDI (1000 2s lipo)
I'm curious that the plane doesn't have a removable canopy for easy access to the components but the plane's design benefits from the fact that the fuse is more streamlined this way. I'm intrigued.
Great video. I can tell that KE is solid and that the overall flight characteristics are very decent. Also, the 26 seems to have enough grunt to hover and 3d.
I will post a video once I get comfortable with the bird.
By the way, where did you get that nice looking Pitts muffler? The muffler in my engine resembles the one in my DL50. Large and bulky. Unfortunately I will have to do extra carving of the cowl which is a shame as the plane's appearance will suffer. But overall, I give it a 10 for looks! (one of the reasons I bought it)
Regards,
J.
Takk igjen
I noticed both in your build thread and the manufacturer's photos that the Katana sports a metal spinner. Is it included in the kit or is an aftermarket product?
I'm out of luck regarding finding the pitts muffler around here so for now will use the RCG stock unit. Lastly, would you consider that changing the aluminum (my assumption) landing gear for a carbon fiber one will significantly improve the bird's floating capabilities?
Thanks again

I have decided to remove the RCG 26cc from my Katana and decided to use a DLE 30 instead. The 26 cc was not running consistently but the 30 is and it has so much more power. The Kat has turned into a rocket ship. The only caveat is the larger prop, in my case a JXF 19x8 but the ground clearance is still good. I had to cut the cowling around the choke/throttle areas but all things considered it did not turn out too bad.
